A Callaway County woman is without a house after a fire gutted her home and a camper Monday afternoon.
Boone County Fire Protection District Chief Scott Olsen told reporters that motorists passing by on Interstate 70 called to report the fire.
Units from both the Boone County and North Callaway Fire Protection Districts responded.
Chief Olsen said the fire had started in the house and spread to a camper sitting next to the house. The fire also damaged a banner on a billboard above the house and some siding on a garage next door.
The camper was destroyed and Chief Olsen said the house sustained enough damage to be considered a total loss.
Monday's high heat added to the danger facing firefighters. Chief Olsen said several firefighters became overheated and had to take water breaks to cool off, though he said nobody had to be hospitalized.
Chief Olsen said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
