EPA Administrator tours Rocheport family farm

McCarthy said a controversial proposal is not about restricting farmers, but protecting our nationĂ¢??s downstream water quality.

A top Washington official toured a Boone County family farm today.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy visited Bill Heffernan??s corn and soybean farm east of Rocheport.

She is supporting a proposed rule to protect our nation??s waterways under The Clean Water Act called ??Waters of the U.S.??.

According the American Farm Bureau, the proposal shows that the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers are trying to regulate virtually all water.

Congress and the Supreme Court have rejected that idea.

McCarthy said the proposal is not about restricting farmers, but protecting our nation??s downstream water quality.

McCarthy said, ??Our challenge is to make sure that we work through challenges and concerns that the agriculture community has, that we listen to those concerns and we produce rules that help us do our mission which is to protect public health, the environment, drinking water supplies and natural resources that we all rely on.??

McCarthy continues her tour of Missouri tomorrow with a luncheon at the Kansas City Agribusiness Council.
