Mon, 03 Feb 2014 14:21:22 GMT — Columbia Firefighters were at Jefferson Middle School on Rogers Street early Monday morning for an electrical fire. Several 9-1-1 callers reported hearing a loud bang and seeing sparks and smoke coming from the roof of the middle school at about 6 a.m.When Columbia Firefighters got to the school they found a large electrical fire on the exterior of the buildingâ??s north-east corner. Firefighters isolated the area, notified the power company which eventually shut the power off to the affected area.Once Columbia Water & Light was able to shut the power off, the fire extinguished itself. Authorities said there is no structural damage from the fire but there was light smoke throughout the structure. Crews are working to remove the smoke odor. Electricians working for the Columbia Public Schools are assessing the damage.Because the building is without electricity, the building is also without heat. The cause of the electrical malfunction is not known at this time. Columbia Public Schools are canceled for the day because of hazardous road conditions.
