Custody dispute leads to domestic violence, gun charges

A weekend custody dispute led to the arrest of one man, Rufus Williams, Jr., on weapons and domestic violence charges.

A man is facing weapons and domestic violence charges after a dispute over the custody of an 18-month-old child led to a confrontation allegedly involving a gun.

According to Jefferson City Police, Rufus Williams, Jr., refused to return his son to the boy's mother Sunday evening after a weekend vistitation. The child lives with his mother, although no court-ordered custody agreement is in place.

Police say after the boy's mother demanded his return, Williams became threatening and pointed a gun at the mother, who then left and called police.

When police arrived to the 1100 block of Cordell in Jefferson City, Williams surrendered peacefully and was taken to jail and the boy was returned to his mother.

Williams is charged with unlawful use of a weapon, felon in possession of a gun, and 2nd-degree domestic violence.

Police did not recover a gun.
