New Bloomfield crossing guard retires after 30 years of volunteer work
NEW BLOOMFIELD —
Clifford Holt, the longtime crossing guard at New Bloomfield Elementary School, retired Wednesday.
The 92-year-old retired after serving as the volunteer crossing guard for more than 30 years.
Holt said it's being with the kids that make him smile as he leaves.
"The kids - the kids around here. I don't know, they're like my own kids," Holt said.
The school board voted Tuesday to name the crosswalk after Holt. Superintendent David Tramel said a sign will be placed near the crosswalk to honor Holt.
Holt was the first ever African-American Chief of Police for the New Bloomfield Police Department. He also served in World War II.
