Community supports Honor Flight escorts in their honorable fight

Why bad things happen to good people is a question that remains unanswered. Dave and Becka Bledsoe were part of last November's Veteran Honor Flight bike escort. On their way home, the unthinkable happened. Dave and Becka's motorcycle hit a deer.

Dave said, "He jumped and we hit him while he was still in the air. No time to react."

Becka lost her helmet in the accident and suffered eight skull fractures."For me, it has been tough because of the brain injuries I have. Problems with memory, concentration and cognitive ability," she said.

It's also been tough for Dave who lost his leg after the incident. Before the accident, he said, "I was very active. Fire department and stuff.â??,

However, Dave was showing off his new prosthetic leg and positive attitude. He said, "We will absolutely ride again, absolutely. Thatâ??s going to be one of the very first things on our list is to get back on a bike."

For the couple, healing from the incident has been a challenge. Keeping up with the stack of medical bills is another.

Friends say Dave and Becka are good people. Their community, too, recognizes this and has rallied behind the couple.

Tammy Weider and the Central Missouri Riders have organized a poker run and auction in benefit of Dave and Becka.Tammy said, "We realize this could have been any of us. They are our friends and we wanted to help. We couldn't just sit by and not do anything."

The two escorts of an Honor Flight are now recovering by putting up an honorable fight. The Bledsoes are thankful for all the support they have received.
