Columbia teen murdered

On Saturday around 12:30 a.m. Columbia Police were dispatched to multiple reports of shots fired in the 3600 block of West Sugar Tree Lane.

Several callers indicated that someone had been shot.

The victim, Bryan Rankin, 17, of Columbia, was taken to a local hospital via private vehicle with a gunshot wound to the body.

It is believed the shooting stemmed from a disturbance at a party in the area.

Officers responded to the original scene, as well as the hospital.

Officers believed the suspect was on foot in the area and began an exhaustive search, but were unable to locate the suspect.

Several witnesses were identified and transported to the police department to speak with investigators.

The suspect, a 15 year old male juvenile, was identified and police began searching for him.

Police were notified around 4:00 a.m. that the victim had died at a local hospital and a homicide investigation was initiated.

Around 5:30 a.m. police located the suspect in the 5900 block of Gregory Drive and took him into custody without incident.

He was arrested for Second Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action.

Police are not seeking any other suspects in this case at this time.

No other injuries were reported in relation to this incident.
