Columbia police: Make your entry into 2018 a safe one
Columbia police offered tips on their Facebook page on how to stay safe New Year's Eve.
They remind residents that the shooting of fireworks or firearms into the air is hazardous and illegal.
CPD also emphasized to not drink and drive. As New Year's Eve is a popular drinking night, authorities remind the necessity of arranging for a designated driver even if that means relying on a rideshare service. In general, police say to avoid drugs and excessive drinking altogether.
Temperatures also warn of frigid cold and wind chill. Law enforcement understands that there will still be revelers enjoying their own festivities outside. They advise to stay with a group and to leave if the party gets out of hand.
And if leaving home, don't forget about furry friends. Bring pets inside before going out and remember that they need warmth too.
