Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman is urging everyone to turn off their lights for an hour this Saturday night.
Millions of people in 4,000 cities and 88 countries are expected to take part in this year TMs Earth Hour 2010.
The event requires you to turn off lights and non-essential electricity as a symbol of reducing the effect of global climate change.
Earth Hour will take place this Saturday night between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m central time.
City leaders say participation could lead to lower utility bills.
This could be a time," said Columbia Councilwoman Barbara Hoppe, "where we focus on everything you can do to save money and put it in your pocket and spend it on other business in the local economy.
Some of the more visible Columbia locations that will go dark during earth hour 2010 include Mizzou TMs Jessie Hall and Columns, the Tiger Hotel sign in Downtown Columbia and Columbia TMs City Hall and Public Library.
