Columbia man killed in afternoon crash

A Columbia man is dead after crashing his car on Grindstone Parkway just after 2 p.m. Sunday.

According to Columbia Police, 27-year-old Gabriel Watkins was driving eastbound on Grindstone near Rock Quarry Road when he ran off the road and hit a raised concrete curb.

The vehicle continued on the curb and eventually onto a grass shoulder. Evidence shows the vehicle then went back onto the road in the Rock Quarry southbound turn lane.

Police say the vehicle then hit a raised concrete median in the intersection, becoming airborne before hitting an electronic signal pole and large concrete base.

The Columbia Fire Deptartment extricated Watkins from the vehicle.

He was then taken to University hospital and pronounced dead just after 3 p.m.

Police say Watkins was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

At this time they are not sure what caused Watkins to leave the road. The investigation is ongoing.
