Columbia man dead, another injured, in single-car accident

One Columbia man is dead, another injured, after a crash early Sunday morning.

One man is dead and another injured after a single-car accident on Mexico Gravel Road early Sunday morning.

Columbia Police say a gray 2008 Mazda RX-8 was traveling westbound after 2 a.m. when it left the roadway while taking a curve and collided with a raised concrete water drain outside a residence.

The vehicle became airborne and collided with an embankment, then became airborne again.

While in the air, the vehicle struck a tree about 15 to 20 feet above ground level before coming to a rest on the grass.

Both the driver, 25-year-old Rodolfo Rodriguez, and the passenger, 24-year-old Dante Jones, were ejected from the car while it was airborne.

Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene and Jones was transported to University Hostpital with moderate injuries.

Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, but the seats were reclined in a manner that the seatbelts did not restrain them.

The investigation is ongoing.
