Columbia man arrested on child porn charges

57-year-old Scott May of Columbia is charged with one count of possession of child pornography.

A Columbia man is in custody in the Boone County jail on $50,000 bond on charges of possession of child pornography.

57-year-old Scott May was taken into custody by the Missouri State Highway Patrol at his home in the 2300 block of Winchester Drive at approximately 4:00 Thursday afternoon, according to Boone County Sheriff's Department Detective Tom O'Sullivan.

The charges filed indicate May was in possession of more than 20 pictures and at least one video involving child porn.

According to a probable cause statement from the Highway Patrol, a trooper was conducting an online investigation during which he searched online networks known to traffic in child porn, and downloaded images that were stored on May's computer. The trooper describes several of the images as involving girls between the ages of 12-15 posing in seductive and sexually explicit positions. May told the investigator that sharing files was not his intention.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that May has been a columnist there for more than 25 years, writing movie review and technical columns for which he was paid per column. His work has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
