A Columbia community and educational leader has died.
Dr. Eliot Battle died Tuesday night from injuries he sustained in a car accident Friday in Columbia.
Columbia Public Schools say Battle was surrounded by friends and family when he passed away.
Schools officials said he and his wife Muriel created a "legacy in our community that we were honored and grateful to be able to celebrate".
Dr. Battle was the first African American to work in an integrated Columbia school.
Just 10 days ago, Dr. Battle was at the Muriel Williams Battle High School for the dedication of Columbia's newest high school named after his wife.
Missouri United Methodist Church will be working with the Battle family to determine his services.
