Columbia Chamber endorses highway tax

The amendment calls for a temporary 3/4 of a cent increase on the state sales tax to pay for new roads and bridges

The Columbia Chamber of Commerce is supporting Amendment 7.

The amendment calls for a temporary 3/4 of a cent increase on the state sales tax to pay for new roads and bridges.

Columbia Chamber administrators said many of the proposed projects would happen in the Mid-Missouri area.

Columbia Chamber President Matt McCormick said, â??Once that list of projects came out from MoDOT, with the airport on there and the extension of Stadium, those 2 projects alone with a number of other ones are so important to Columbia and the success of our business community and the success of Columbia as a whole, thatâ??s one of the main reasons to endorse Amendment 7.â??

Opponents said if the tax is passed, the amendment would shift the tax burden onto people who may not use it.

Amendment 7 will appear on the August 5 ballot.
