Columbia brush fire burns 50 acres

A brush fire burned almost 50 acres of grass and timber Thursday in northeast Columbia.

Columbia firefighters were called to a small grass fire the 4800 block of North Hinkson Road around 11:45 a.m. Windy conditions caused the fire to grow to nearly 5 acres, and additional resources from the Boone County Fire Protection District were called.

"The combination of dry vegetation, high winds, and low humidity make for high fire danger this time of year," said Fire Battalion Chief John Metz.

It took nearly two hours to contain the fire, which started as a controlled burn. Seven fires trucks and twenty firefighters responded to the blaze.

No structures were damaged, and there were no reported injuries.
