The Cole County Sheriff's Department plans to increase DWI enforcement this summer.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration promotes safe driving during the summer months with its "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.
"Enforcement efforts like this are high visibility and visibility is a deterrent. We hope to continue lowering the traffic and alcohol related death counts in Cole County. We want everyone to enjoy their summer vacations and not have to suffer the loss of a loved one," said Cole County Sheriff Greg White.
The Sheriff's Department was awarded $28,878 in traffic grants for 2012-2013 and $23,878 is funding sobriety checkpoints and DWI focused enforcement.
The total number of Missouri traffic deaths in 2012 declined to 826, one of the lowest rates since the 1950s.
On Wednesday records showed a 20% decline this year with 313 deaths compared to last year's 392 deaths for the end of June.
