Classroom Facebook proposal sparks debate

Should school teachers be allowed to "friend" students on Facebook? It's an issue an Indiana school district is trying to come up with a solution for.

An Indiana school district is discussing an issue that many other districts have had to come to grips with: should school teachers be allowed to "friend" students on Facebook?

A board member recently proposed changes to a policy that would let teaches set up classroom Facebook pages -- if they have permission from administrators.

Unlike personal Facebook pages, these pages wouldn't let teachers accept or deny "friends" -- and would be used for communication among teachers, students and parents.

The (Munster) Times ( ) reports the school superintendent is concerned about the idea, saying the district should take "a strong position" against teachers "friending" students on personal Facebook pages.
