Church celebrates 60th annual barbecue in the heat

Volunteers prepare for the 60th Annual Olivet Christian Church Barbecue. They started cooking meat at 3:30 a.m.

Olivet Christian Church celebrated it's 60th annual community barbecue Sunday. Volunteers started cooking at 3:30 a.m. to prepare for the thousands of church and community members they serve at the event.

The barbecue is a way to fundraise for the church, local charities, and to gather the community. Organizer Edie Pigg said a lot of work goes into planning the event each year.

"We have people coming from Illinois, and coming from Iowa this weekend so they can come to the barbecue," she said. "It's a good community activity."

The church has to take precautions to ensure food stays safe in the extreme heat. Pigg said they work with the Missouri Health Department to make sure all goes well.

More than 325 pies were served at the event, and countless pounds of meat.
