Chadwick wins Columbia City Council seat

Ginny Chadwick will succeed Fred Schmidt as the First Ward's city councilperson.

Residents of Columbia's First Ward have a new voice on the city council after Tuesday's election.

Ginny Chadwick will succeed Fred Schmidt after taking home 67 percent of the vote, easily defeating opponents Tyree Byndom, Bill Easley and John Clark. Schmidt chose not to seek reelection after one term on the council. Chadwick said she was excited that voters chose her and she was grateful for the guidance she received from Schmidt.

"There's not much I didn't learn from this campaign," she said, sharing a laugh with Schmidt, who was attending her watch party. "I've learned a ton."

Chadwick, who has criticized recent council decisions regarding student housing, told KRCG 13 students are vital to the downtown area's culture but the city needs to make sure it has the required infrastructure to deal with new apartments.
