Canada, Columbia companies plan research venture

A Canadian drug research company plans to begin conducting human clinical trials at a Columbia facility.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that Bio Pharma Services Inc. will operate out of a 9,000-square-foot, 48-bed testing laboratory, beginning next year. The Toronto-based company said in a statement that the location gives it the ability to expand to a 24,000-square-feet area with room for 140 beds.

The building Bio Pharma Services will use is owned by Joe and Kim Gorman, who also co-own and operate Paternity Testing Corp., or PTC Laboratories, on the site. Joe Gorman says he and other owners of PTC Laboratories will be partners in the Canadian firm's U.S. venture and are providing the lab space and some business services.

Tax incentives will be sought for the venture.
