Boone County Sheriff's Department investigates murder

Deputies inspected a broken window and other damaged property at Bennettâ??s apartment.

The search is on for the person who deputies say stabbed a Prathersville man to death outside of his apartment.

Boone County Sheriffâ??s Deputies found Richard Bennett, 40, with multiple stab wounds outside of his apartment on West Wilcott Drive on Wednesday about 9 p.m. Bennett died a few hours later. James Belmore was Bennettâ??s friend and neighbor.

Belmore said, â??Richard, I worked with him a few years back at the tribune. He was a good guy. He did a lot of work around here for the landlord. I just donâ??t understand.â??

Neighbors said Bennett cut the grass at his apartment complex to help pay his rent. Detectives said Bennett lived in Prathersville for about a year. Investigators are trying to question more neighbors and witnesses. They have very few leads. Deputies inspected a broken window and other damaged property at Bennettâ??s apartment. Detectives do not know the motive for the stabbing.

Boone County Sheriff Detective Tom Oâ??Sullivan said, â??Thereâ??s plenty to do. We have quite a number of officers and deputies out working this investigation. Itâ??s the top priority for the department right now to try and make an arrest in this case.â??

Investigators have no suspect or vehicle description.

Boone County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred Wednesday night just north of Columbia.

According to Detective Tom O'Sullivan, deputies were called to a residence in the 6100 block of West Wilcott Drive North in the Prathersville area. There, they found the victim, Richard A. Bennett, 40, outside his apartment suffering from stab wounds.

Bennett was transported to University Hospital in Columbia, where he died several hours later. No other information is being released at this time.
