Auxvasse murder suspect admits victims did not fight back

Jake Gastler

Court documents released Tuesday revealed details about a recent homicide in Callaway County.

According to Sheriff Dennis Crane, Jake Gastler admitted to assaulting both Zachery O'Connor and his father Michael O'Connor during an incident at their residence in Auxvasse. Gastler initially made the 911 call and reported that he found the men lying on the ground, covered in blood.

Gastler admitted that he repeatedly punched Zachery O'Connor in the head during a verbal confrontation in which O'Connor pulled him by the shirt. He then repeatedly punched Michael in the head after the altercation with Zachery. Gastler also admitted that neither Zachery nor Michael fought back.

Both Zachery and Michael had head injuries that appeared consistent with blunt force trauma. Michael was airlifted to University of Missouri Hospital in critical condition. Zachery died at the scene.

Jake Gastler is charged with second-degree murder and first-degree assault. He is being held on $700,000 bond.
