Auxvasse man pleads not guilty to murdering neighbor

Jake Gastler has pleaded not guilty in the death of his neighbor.

An Auxvasse man has pleaded not guilty to murder and assault charges relating to the death of his neighbor.

Jake Gastler is charged with second-degree murder and two counts of first-degree assault in the death of Zachary W. O'Connor and the injury of Zachary's father, Michael. Gastler called the Callaway County Sheriff's Office around 1 a.m. on Aug. 31 to report he had found the O'Connors lying in a pool of blood. Deputies arrested and charged Gastler after inconsistencies surfaced in his account of what happened.

Each charge carries a sentence of between 10 and 30 years or life imprisonment.
