Auxvasse man accused of murdering neighbor

Jake Gastler is charged with second-degree murder and assault.

An Auxvasse man is accused of second-degree murder and first-degree assault after reporting his neighbors had been attacked.

The Callaway County Sheriff's Office said in a release that Jake Gastler, 22, called in to report he had found two of his neighbors lying in a pool of blood just before 1 a.m. Saturday.

When deputies arrived at the residence in the 1000 block of Blue Ridge Road, they found Zachery W. O'Connor, 30, dead. O'Connor's father, Michael, 57, was airlifted to University Hospital and listed in critical condition. Deputies arrested and charged Gastler after inconsistencies surfaced in his account of the events. Gastler is currently being held in the Callaway County jail on a $700,000 bond.

An autopsy is scheduled for Zachery O'Connor on September 2. The sheriff's office said no further information would be released until the autopsy had been completed.
