The American Heart Association is looking for 10 local women to participate in their 12-week Go Red Challenge and get a heart-healthy makeover.

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one killer of women. The Go Red Challenge seeks to combat the statistic, offering selected participants free wellness screenings, nutritional planning assistance, free three-month membership to the WELLWARE Fitness Center and a personalized fitness program.

In exchange, participants must attend an AHA meet and greet event on May 21, complete preliminary and final wellness screenings, partake in weekly educational meetings and training session and make an appearance at the Columbia Go Red luncheon August 20.

“It is always rewarding to celebrate the successful milestones these women achieve at our Go Red For Women Luncheon,” Leanne Geiss, Go Red for Women Director said in a news release.

The organization will select participants with respect to age, lifestyle, marital status, ethnicity and physical health. AHA is searching for women who are ready to make a positive change to their health.

“We hope that the 12-week Go Red Challenge is the beginning of a life-long journey for the participants,” Geiss said.

Applications for the Go Red Challenge are available at heart.org/columbiagored and are due April 27. Chosen participants will be notified in May.
