35 acres of abandoned mine to be reclaimed

MILLERSBURG, Mo. (AP) -- The state has chosen a St. Louis company to reclaim about 35 acres of an abandoned coal mine land near Millersburg in Callaway County.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources awarded a $609,942 contract to Pangea Group of St. Louis to reclaim surface-mined lands about two miles east of Millersburg. The land is on private property.

The DNR says in a news release that the land is a safety hazard to the landowner and area residents.

The Jefferson City News-Tribune reports the DNR expects the project to improve water quality in Millers Creek by reducing the amount of acid-forming sediments in the stream.

The project is expected to be completed by Oct. 1.
