14-year-old charged in shooting of New Florence girl

A New Florence boy has been charged in the shooting of an 11-year-old girl Sunday.

A 14-year-old New Florence boy has been charged with 2nd degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon in the shooting Sunday of an 11-year-old girl. The girl was shot in the upper torso with a shotgun, according to Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies.

Bruce McKinnon, chief juvenile officer for Montgomery County, says the boy will remain in detention until his adjudication hearing on June 9. At that time, he will enter a plea to the charges.

McKinnon says the investigation has not determined a motive for the shooting or if it was an accident. He says that determination could have an impact on possible further charges.

The girl survived the shooting and was taken to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis, according to a family member. Her condition is unknown due to legal prohibitions on releasing information about juveniles.

The boy's mother was arrested Sunday night for endangering the welfare of a child.
