12-year-old boy dies in Phelps County house fire
The Phelps County Sheriff's Department confirmed Sunday a 12-year-old boy died in an early morning fire in Newburg.
Deputies and the Doolittle Fire Department responded to a structure fire on East 2nd Street at around 3:24 a.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, officials said the structure was fully engulfed in the fire. Deputies were told a 12-year-old boy was still on the second floor of the home. Crews attempted to make entry but were unable to do so because of heavy smoke and fire, according to the department.
Fire personnel on scene determined the structure was not safe to enter, according to officials. The department said the 12-year-old boy was the fire's only fatality.
Firefighters were eventually able to control the fire with assistance from the Rolla Rural Fire Department, Rolla City Fire Department and St. James Fire Department.
Three juveniles were taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center for smoke inhalation and burns. An adult family member was treated for injuries at the scene, according to officials. The sheriff's department said a deputy was also taken to the medical center for smoke inhalation and was later released.
Officials said as of Sunday afternoon, the cause of the fire had not yet been determined.
