Lawmakers urge Nixon to sign criminal code revamp

Nixon has expressed concern the bill would do too much at one time and could contain mistakes.

Missouri lawmakers and groups representing law enforcement and victims are urging Gov. Jay Nixon to sign a criminal code overhaul.

Nixon has expressed concern the bill would do too much at one time and could contain mistakes.

But those reservations were dismissed by supporters at a Tuesday news conference. They say the bill's delayed effective date in 2017 gives lawmakers plenty of time to correct any potential errors. Legislators also want to create a permanent committee to routinely study the state's criminal laws and to recommend changes every decade.

The criminal code overhaul was passed by the Legislature last week. It would create new classes of felonies and misdemeanors, and reorganize existing crimes to fit the new penalty structure.
